2035 - Zagora - Excursions
Description
All excursions are organized by the staff of a good hotel in Zagora, in the south desert. You can use this hotel like base for the discovering of this wonderful area (go to hotel page).
All the excursions depart from and return to Zagora.
Excursion N°1 - 1 day in the desert by 4x4
Departure early in the morning with a qualified guide; our direction is Tamegroute to visit the koranic library. Taking a dirt road, we cross the Draa palm grove and different Kasbahs and mud dwellings: Nesrate, Ait Isfoul Bni Hayoun, Kettaoua. After M’hamid, the very last village before the immense desert plain, the itinerary goes into a wood of Calotropis Procera (called Sodome apple tree) Tamaris, Acacias, the through the erg, finding wells, to reach finally the paradise of the oasis Oum Laag, where a water spring flows giving life to surrounding palm trees and refreshing the nomad caravans passing by. After lunch pause under the tents of nomads, we resume our trip toward Chgaga sand dunes (300m high and 50km long ) and take our way back to Zagora in late afternoon, arriving at approximately 6.30p.m..
Excursion N°2 - 1 night in the desert by 4x4
Departure in the afternoon follows the same itinerary as excursion n°1. We arrive in Chegaga at about 5p.m., at sunset, a splendid scenery to admire over the huge golden sand dunes of south eastern Morocco. Dinner around a bonfire, the night is so magical. Reluctant to go to bed, we sleep under the stars or under nomad tents, to discover some secrets of the desert. We wake up early in the morning not to miss the sunrise from behind the sand dunes. After breakfast we start our route back to arrive at Zagora at about 11.00.
Excursion N°3 - 2 days+1 night in the desert by 4x4.
Departure in the morning after breakfast, we take Ouladbrahim dirt road, cross the villages of Foumtakkat, Kettaoua, El Bleida to arrive to Erglihoudi, where we have lunch; a traditional meal is waiting for us under a Berber tent. We then resume the dirt road heading for the Chegaga desert, where we bivouac for the night. After breakfast, we ride the dromedaries between the sand dunes and the desert plain. We then arrive at Iriqui lake, situated between Draa valley and the south slopes of Anti-Atlas. During the rainy season this area it is a meeting point for flights of migrating birds. Lunch at Foum Zguid, then back to Zagora in late afternoon passing by Bourbia and Fayja.
Excursion: N° 4 - 1 Day by dromedary.
Departure in the morning towards Ben Dlala. After 3 hours of camel ride, we arrive at Elmaader (landscape of sand dunes and palm trees ). In the shade of palm trees, we prepare a Berber meal consisting of a salad, tajine, dates and mint tea. At about 3p.m. we take the way back to Zagora, across palm groves and villages. In late afternoon, we unload the animals and our trip ends.
Excursion: N° 5 - 1 Night in the desert / dromedary ride
Departure in early afternoon towards a peaceful bivouac area. In the direction of Bendlala we stop at mid way at Nekhla sand dunes to stay for the night. After setting for night camping, we admire the sun set scenery and the desert ceremony begins. Mint tea and tajine prepared for supper, afterwards we spend a magical night under the stars or in a nomads’ tent. In the morning we get up early in order not to miss the sunrise behind the sand dunes. After breakfast we take the way back to Zagora where we arrive at approximately 11a.m..
Excursion : N°6 - 3 days/2 nights by dromedaries
1st day : After dressing as nomads we start our trip in the morning, eastward of Zagora. On the way we have a Berber meal, then resume the trip across the first sand dunes, being mid way to Tomiat, the place of our night bivouac .
2nd day: After breakfast, our caravan makes its way to Tamegroute, a village where we can visit a famous Koranic library, the place used to be an important religious centre, containing the most important Koranic school in south eastern Morocco. Afterwards we head for Tinfou (8 kms away) to bivouac for the night on the sand around a bonfire .
3rd day: Early in the morning we get up to admire sunrise and have breakfast. Then we take the way back to Zagora, half-way we pause to have lunch at a native’s. In the late afternoon the trip ends in Zagora.
Excursion N° 7 - 1 night in the desert /dromedary +4x4.
Departure at 9.00a.m. riding dromedary across Zagora's palm grove, we follow the ancient caravan road indicated where we find the curious road sign “Tombouctou 52 days “. (dromedary riding, of course). After lunch, at 3.00p.m., we make our way via 4x4 to Tamgroute, to visit the ancient koranic library. Then we follow the dirt road to find Nesrate palm grove and Kasbahs and Kettawa. After M’Hamid, the very last village before the immense desert plain, the itinerary goes on across a wood of tamaris, acacias, then the erg as far as Oum Laalag Oasis, giving life to surrounding palm trees and refreshing the nomad caravans passing by. We find again the huge dunes of Chegaga (300m of height and 50 km of length ). The sun is about to set and it’s a splendid scenery to admire. Dinner around a bonfire. The night is so magical. We either sleep under the stars on under nomad tents. This is a way to discover the desert's secrets. Early in the morning we get up to admire sunrise. After breakfast we start back to Zagora where we arrive at 12.00a.m..
Excursion N° 8 - 1 day and 1 night in the desert /4x4 + dromedary.
Departure early in the morning 8.00a.m. with a qualified guide; our direction is Tamegroute to visit the koranic library. Taking a dirt road, we cross the Draa palm grove and different Kasbahs and mud dwellings: Nesrate, Ait Isfoul Bni Hayoun, Kettaoua. We pause for a lunch under the tents of nomads, afterwards we follow the other piste to the dunes of erg Lihoudi (called dunes of the Judaics), then we have a dromedary ride ending at approximately 5,30p.m. To admirethe sunset, then the desert ceremony begins: mint tea and the tajine being prepared, we spend a magical night under the stars or in the nomad’s tent. Early in the morning we get up to admire sunrise. After breakfast we start back to Zagora where we arrive at 10.00a.m..
